Meeting Philosophy:

We are now in the planning stages for the forthcoming Green Bank Workshop. The topic of the workshop will be the use of astronomical instruments, in particular the GBT, to study chemical processes in astronomical environments. Thus, its focus will NOT be on molecules as tracers of physical processes, but rather the inverse: using molecules to provide information on chemical bonding and formation in environments not easily replicated on Earth.

It will be sponsored jointly by the NRAO and the newly-formed Center for Chemistry of the Universe (CCU), headquartered in the Department of Chemistry at UVa. The meeting is an opportunity to highlight interesting chemistry problems associated with interstellar chemistry. The speakers that we plan to invite should emphasize that this is a chance for them to give a talk that focuses on chemical problems that interest them, even if they are only tangentially related to current topics in astronomy.

We have decided on 6 sessions for the meeting. These include four topics arranged by the CCU:

  1. Laboratory Spectroscopy and Radio Astronomy Observations
  2. Interstellar Surface Chemistry and Ices
  3. Theoretical Modeling of Interstellar Chemistry
  4. Laboratory Kinetics for Interstellar Reactions

And working with the GBT, two other sessions:

  1. Molecular Astrophysics with the GBT
  2. GBT Instrumentation for Chemistry Applications
Pre-registration for the meeting is now open for those interested in attending and to be eligible for full registration which will start on April, 2009. Please pass along these dates and corresponding information to your colleagues who may also be interested. Finally, please contact us at che-ccu@virginia.edu with any questions, comments, or suggestions.
