Each reel had ~3.5 miles of tape on it, an impressive system for the time. In 1994 NRAO had both a VLBA operator — to operate the array in real time — and a correlator operator to operate the correlator after the tapes from all stations had been shipped to Socorro. Later, the two functions were combined into a single position.
