The VLA was dedicated in October 1980, and a 20th anniversary celebration was held at the site on 24 May 2000. There were 400 guests, including attendees at the concurrent Gas and Galaxy Evolution Conference, scientists, retired and active employees. This formal 20th anniversary celebration event was held on 23 August 2000.
