Interacting Group Arp 313
Description
A collection of radio and optical images of the interacting group of galaxies Arp 313, composed of the galaxies NGC 3991, NGC 3994, and NGC 3995. Clockwise (from the upper left panel) are the distribution of total atomic hydrogen (HI) shown as contours and greyscales; the velocity distribution of the HI contoured upon the total HI map; color-coded HI velocity field (red indicates gas which is moving away from us, blue gas that is moving towards us); and the total HI map contoured upon an optical image from the Digital Sky Survey. The extended distribution of the neutral hydrogen indcates that the galaxies in this group have interacted, throwing the gas which was originally within the disks of the spirals far out into intergalactic space.
Contour levels on the total HI maps are 0.24, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4, 4.8, and 9.6 x 1020 cm-2. The gray scales in the first two panels are in units of 1020 cm-2. The color-coded velocity scale in panel 3 is in units of kilometers per second.
