Description:Astrophytness, the NRAO wellness program, sponsored the "Hein Hvatum Memorial VLA Bicycle Challenge," a bicycle ride from Socorro to the VLA site and back (with several options for shorter rides). Hein Hvatum, long-time NRAO Associate Director, was an avid bicycler through his entire life. For many years he organized the annual ride over 117 mountainous miles from Charlottesville to Green Bank for the Green Bank summer picnic: Charlottesville to Green Bank on Friday, picnic on Saturday, Green Bank to Charlottesville on Sunday. In 1999, a small NRAO group biked a part of the Continental Divide Trail. This photo, taken by cyclist Craig Walker, shows Peter Napier, Hein Hvatum (long-retired by 1999), and Gene Runion on one of the smoother parts of the trail. [show more]

Description:The winning cricket team, Socorro, November 1980. Front row: Peter Napier, Chris Salter, Dave Gibson, Gareth Hunt [captain]. Back row: Carl Bignell (holding Celeste and John Bignell), Bill Randolph, Rosalie Ewald, Tim Cornwell, Eva Jean Rigby, Brook Ekers, Eric Russell, Clair Rigby. The VLA team (pictured) beat the Socorro team. Players represented the USA, Jamaica, India, England, Holland, New Zealand, and Canada. Writing in the January 1981 Observer (v.22#1), Chris Salter said, "Passers by could be forgiven for imagining that mystical rites were being performed on the playing fields of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology on Saturday November 8th [1980]. The fact of the matter is that the slow perambulations and weird cavortings of fourteen white clad figures did not mark a frightening outbreak of alien worship but the progress of the first Socorro/VLA cricket match." Description:Left to right: Miller Goss, Tim Cornwell, Bob Brown, Peter Napier, Dave Shaffer, Dave Finley (at podium), Dick Sramek. This ceremony was held in the VLBA Operations area of the Array Operations Center in Socorro. The map behind Peter Napier contains LEDs in the locations of the VLBA antennas. The table to the left of the podium holds a bar-code reader that was triggered by Sen. Pete Domenici, causing the VLBA antennas all to begin pointing at a specific source. Their azimuths and elevations began changing on the monitor behind Napier and, one by one, from East to West, the LEDs indicating the antennas lit up. [show more]

Description:In late October and early November 1994, Peter Napier, Frazer Owen, Angel Otarola, and Simon Radford visited a possible site for the Millimeter Array on the Chilean Chajnantor plateau, the eventual site for ALMA. This photo shows (clockwise) Peter Napier (standing), with Frazer Owen and Angel Otarola working on equipment sheltered behind a large rock, with small wind break walls built to each side. Solar panels (blue) on the ground and batteries in the cardboard box power a 225 GHz tipping radiometer, the gray box visible in the door of the tent. The team made the first measurements of millimeter wavelength (225 GHz) atmospheric transparency on the Chajnantor plateau. These measurements gave the first indication the plateau enjoys excellent observing conditions for submm astronomy, much better than any sites previously considered for the MMA. More extensive measurements, which began in April 1995, confirmed the initial indications. The tent site is about 4 km north of the ALMA AOS building. [show more]

Description:In late October and early November 1994, Peter Napier (standing), Angel Otarola (back to camera), Frazer Owen (wool hat), and Simon Radford (taking the photo) visited a possible site for the Millimeter Array on the Chilean Chajnantor plateau, the eventual site for ALMA. This photo, looking to the west and into the prevailing wind, shows equipment sheltered behind a large rock, with small wind break walls built to each side. Solar panels on the ground and batteries in the cardboard box power a 225 GHz tipping radiometer, the gray box with a handle sitting in the door of the tent. The team, here troubleshooting some difficulty with the tipping radiometer, made the first measurements of millimeter wavelength (225 GHz) atmospheric transparency on the Chajnantor plateau. These measurements gave the first indication the plateau enjoys excellent observing conditions for submm astronomy, much better than any sites previously considered for the MMA.
