National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) employees Shane Baca and Matt Metevier direct drinking water from the Very Large Array (VLA) water system into a tanker for delivery to the village of Magdalena. The village's main well went dry on June 5, and residents have relied largely on water brought in from outside since then. To date, NRAO has donated more than 177,000 gallons of water to Magdalena.
"We're very glad we have the capability to help out our neighbors at a time like this, and are happy to be a part of getting Magdalena through this difficult problem," said Dale Frail, NRAO's Director of New Mexico Operations.
In addition to helping Magdalena, NRAO also has a standing agreement to provide water to the U.S. Forest Service when needed for firefighting in the area.
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation, operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc.
