Far-IR Spectral Diagnostics of Starbursts and AGN
Far-IR spectroscopy with ISO has shown us how to separate out the energy
produced by young stars from that produced by accretion onto a central
massive black hole. Some of the key diagnostic lines, of [O I], [O III],
and [C II] carry significant fractions of the total energy output, and
thus can be detected by ALMA in galaxies with sufficiently high redshifts.
The greatest scientific yield comes from ALMA observations at the highest
frequencies. Some specific examples will be presented.
